Stress Granules

'Stress Granules' is a solo exhibition by the Austrian visual artist Sophie-Luise Passow. It showcases new, never-before-seen works from an ongoing series inspired by the biological phenomenon of stress granules.

Stress granules are microscopic structures that form in cells under strain. If the stress is short-lived, the granules assemble and dissolve as part of a transient adaptive process that protects important cellular components. If the stress becomes chronic, however, the granules can harden and eventually lead to disease.

Instead of simply illustrating this biological process, Passows large-format paintings channel its core ambivalence as a defense mechanism. Informed by an art-science approach, the series invites the public to engage with the tension between adaptive and pernicious stress.

The exhibition is a result of the artist's collaboration with Dr. Urte Laukaityte, an academic researcher at the Center for Philosophy and the Health Sciences (CPHS), Aarhus University.
